The role

Are you a dynamic and driven product development chemist with expertise in an R&D environment about recycling of polymers and/or polymer modification. Within SPEX Technology we are looking for a talented and creative product developer to conduct experimental work in the lab using extrusion, injection molding, or other processing techniques to modify polymers and recycled plastics

Your challenge as product development chemist

Find and explore routes for new product formulations with emphasis on the incorporation of recycled polyolefins in close cooperation with convertors, product formulators and branding companies. Perform your own experiments in the lab and pilot plant, read scientific and patent literature to become a product development expert within SPEX Technology.

Your Role

  • As a product development chemist you are responsible for making new recycled polymer/adhesive/additive products which are accepted by the external clients of SPEX Technology
  • This role requires in depth understanding of synthesis, characterization, and testing from early to late stages of products
  • The successful candidate provides day-to-day R&D support and input into development strategies, selection of polymer recycling routes, scale-up and characterization/testing of new product development processes
  • Fully manage and lead product analysis and testing while documenting progress and results
  • Engage and lead in new product development, with emphasis on “food approved products”
  • Make valuable contributions to assessments of newly developed products (mechanical and chemical testing)
  • Demonstrate process safely in the laboratory, pilot plant and manufacturing facilities
  • Contribute to development of IP portfolio of SPEX Technology
  • Support sales and marketing functions within SPEX Technology by technical support to customers
  • Report results to collaborators and management both verbally and in writing

About OBBOTEC

OBBOTEC was founded in 2018 with the aim to develop unique solutions for the reuse of bio and plastic waste streams. OBBOTEC’s technologies were previously developed by inventor and chemical engineer Obbo Hazewinkel who worked in the petrochemical industry. With his inventions, plastics from waste streams can now be recycled at a high quality or transformed into a (partly green) fuel. OBBOTEC is the owner and incubator of these technologies and has developed two key operational applications. In this way, OBBOTEC contributes to a circular economy and a sustainable world

OBBOTEC-SPEX has a unique solution for recycling plastic (PE & PP). From a plastic-rich waste stream of polyethylene (PE) and/or polypropylene (PP), PE and PP plastic is selectively extracted by dissolution. This removes the additives and contaminants such as colour, odor, plasticizers, and flame retardants. SPEX cleans the plastic (PE & PP) back to near-virgin quality. Afterwards, it can be reused within new, high-standard applications, such as plastic packaging. The yield of this recycling process is almost 100% because only the contaminants and other plastics are being removed

Mixed biomass-plastic waste streams are often difficult to recycle and are therefore incinerated or landfilled. OBBOTEC-HydroCat has developed a third-generation pyrolysis solution specifically for this waste stream, with an integrated hydrogenation step.
With HydroCat’s hydro-cracking, a high-quality marketable fuel is produced with a high caloric value. HydroCat prevents this mixed waste stream from ending up in the waste incinerator and losing energy.
